Billy Connally
The Silent Canvas
Release Date: Available Now!
DN: Talk about your record. Where did you get the idea from? What is the inspiration behind this album?
BC: The idea behind the album was to create a collection of guitar driven instrumentals that were full of melody and atmosphere. the inspiration for the album name and title track came from a friend who sent me this quote from Leopold Stokowski that ''A painter paints pictures on canvas but a musician paints their pictures on silence''.
DN: Who are the musicians that play on the record?
BC: i did all the rhythm and lead guitars as well as played the bass. i also programmed the drums. that was the hardest part beside coming up with the actual ideas for the music. i wanted to keep them simple and grooving but not boring.
DN: Who are some of the bands that influenced you when you were growing up?
BC: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Rush, Styx, Pink Floyd, AC/DC were huge influences on me. then as i started getting into guitarists more i started listening to Yngwie, Satriani, Vai, Shawn Lane, George Lynch, Frank Gambale, Uli Roth...wow this list could really go on for a while! later on i got heavily influenced by the 90's grunge movement with Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots influencing me a lot.
DN: Do you have any projects that you are working on right now or any in the future? Any plans to tour?
BC: I've got my backup band ready to go. our first gig is June 4th opening for Pat Travers in Fairfield CA. my goal right now is to book some shows around the San Francisco Bay Area and up in Sacramento. then do some dates in L.A. as well as up in the Pacific Northwest this Summer. that will hopefully lead up to a Southwest Tour next year and a gig at SXSW early in 2011.
DN: Any interesting stories you would like to share with us about the recording process?
BC: unfortunately i really don't have any since i did the recording in my home, maybe next album i will....
DN: What was the most challenging part of making this record?
BC: Maintaining inspiration and creativeness at the same level for every song. i didn't want any song to just be a "filler" for the album. i wanted each one to have their place in the collection and to help move the album along. i still have my favorites but i made sure to give each song the same attention, especially when it came to production ideas
DN: Is there anyone you'd like to acknowledge for offering support
BC: I'd like to thank my good friends and excellent musicians Marc Pattison and Bob Madsen for their help with learning how to use my recording software. Whenever i had a question or was just simply lost they came to my rescue. Jenny Jackson for her help in creating the artwork for the album. also have to thank Kris Wilson and Letishia Yarborough for helping me with the photography and editing of the artwork.
